Auto Detailing: The Basics

Most car owners know a little something about how to take care of their car, especially when it comes to keeping it new and shiny all the time. However, keeping a car looking at its finest requires a whole lot more than simply applying some high-quality wax on its finish and just buffing it. Remember that cars are subjected to a lot of abuse from harsh elements, dirt, and even smog. You need to learn some key facts about auto detailing in order for you to be able to keep your car protected and looking like new all the time.

What is Auto Detailing?

Auto detailing is not only about the aesthetics of the car and nothing more. Auto detailing is not only done to improve the overall look and beauty of the car, but is also done to help enhance the protection of the car’s exterior finish and various surfaces. Basically, car detailing involves different processes, which would include cleaning of the car’s surface, rejuvenating it back, at least close, to its original state, and protecting the exterior that have been cleaned and rejuvenated.

Avoid Scratching Your Car

One way that you can prolong the beauty and smoothness of your car is by simply avoiding anything that could cause scratches on the surfaces. To avoid this, make sure you don't touch the surface of your car with anything that is hard or rough. If you need to wipe something off your car, use a soft cloth. This will help you avoid dulling up your car’s paint job.

Make Regular Checks on Your Car’s Finish

Perform a regular check up on your car every once in a while can help you avoid any possible damage and problems that could arise in the future. Take note of how your car's finish change over time. Anticipate the condition of your car’s finish, as it could get worse if left untreated.

Know What Materials You are Using

In order to ensure that you don’t ruin your car’s exterior, you need to know the things you need for the detailing job you are planning on your car. Detailing your car would require you to buy a particular type of wax, and buff it in a certain way to achieve a specific effect on your car’s finish to give you that showroom shine and glow.

Car Wash 101 and Auto Detailing

Cleaning a car is a piece of cake, right? That is, if you have the luxury of time and you have the right cleaning materials there with you. Remember that even the most basic procedure in car care does require some thought.

To get started, you must have the right supplies for the job:

* a soft brush;
* finish-safe wheel cleaner;
* liquid car-washing detergent;
* a 3- to 5-gallon bucket;
* car-washing mitts or soft all-cotton towels;
* a hose with pistol-grip nozzle, if possible;
* several all-cotton towels or synthetic chamois for drying.

Give your car a good rinsing from top to bottom, including the wheels and inside the fenders. Always clean the tires and wheels before washing the body, and don't use the same mitt for both. This way you'll avoid contaminating the vehicle's paint with debris from the wheels and tires. Avoid cleaning your car under the sun.

Use a good tire cleaner with a stiff brush to improve the appearance of your tires. Clean the wheels with a wheel cleaner that removes the brake dust.

To wash the body, use a product sold specifically for cars. Do not use household cleaners as they can strip the wax from the paint and damage the finish. Wash one section at a time, starting at the top. Rinse away the soap before moving on to the next section to avoid drying up the soap on the body.

To rinse, start at the top and let the water cascade down the surfaces of the car. To avoid water spotting, dry with a chamois or similar product.

Follow up by waxing, which not only protects the finish but also makes subsequent washing easier. Before proceeding, use a car cleaner to remove contaminants embedded in the paint.
